Yves Saint Laurent has launched their Fall 2013 Collection and it looks to be promising and refreshingly more tempting then their last few collections. The first two items that caught my attention and peaked any interest was their new Radiance Variation Blush (will review soon) and their Mascara volume effet in shade 8, asphalt black.with some shimmer. You will rarely read a review about a new mascara on Beautygypsy (since my loyalty to Helena Rubenstein lash queen has lasted over a decade) but I was honestly intrigued by the steel gray/black with golden shimmer, a good alternative to black mascara. Here is how the company describes this revolutionary mascara:
Exaggerate your lashes with shocking volume from every angle! New and exclusive to YSL, the amplified helix brush with a twisted cut, provides instant excess volume on the lashes, with effortless application. Shaped and styled for excess, this slim brush breaks the rules of volume, allowing for perfect control and precision, combined with a beautifully creamy formula to cover each lash evenly, for a thick and lustrous fringe.
Does this sound intriguing and exciting enough to run out and buy one? Let me start off by saying I haven't used their legendary YSL Effet faux cils mascara in a while ,but the impression I had of it was good but not amazing. This formula is suppose to be a better more impressive version of the original formula, so I will review it and compare it to my holy grail Helena Rubenstein lash queen.
First of all, this new mascara by YSL seems more “watery and/or liquidity.” The benefit of this is it doesn't dry up as fast as Effect faux cils, which allows you more time to build more volume and thicker lashes. For me, it was a bit too runny so it was tricky to apply mascara on the bottom lashes without the risk of looking a bit messy. Secondly, once I was done applying two layers, my lashes did look “amazing” but it felt a bit crunchy which can apply to any mascara that builds volume that fast. Again, I am spoiled by my Helena Rubenstein lash queen that gives me volume and lengthens my lashes without looking or feeling artificial or heavy. On the positive side, I got some serious lashes and it would be perfect if I had a night out and wanted fast and glamorous lashes…this mascara can definitely achieve this! The color is a charcoal black or soft black that still looks “black” but not as harsh if that makes sense.
Verdict? I find this mascara to do everything it claims to do but the trade off is you might get clumpy lashes and some smudging. That is why I felt it is a great evening mascara that you only need for a few hours or a special night out. I don't see myself using this mascara during the day, during a hot summer day or making it a staple product in my kit but I am definitely glad I bought it. I prefer the original “Effect faux cil” mascara simply because its more suitable for daytime. I will leave the decision up to you ladies but won't be repurchasing anytime son and will enjoy having it for “special occasions.”
YSL cosmetics can be purchased at Bergdorf Goodman, Barneys or Nordstrom.com . Retails for $30.
