Tom Ford lipstick in “Sable Smoke”

I have been sporting smokey eyes and pale lips lately and constantly on the lookout for a “nude lipstick” that doesn’t wash me out during cold months. This indeed is a challenge because nude lipsticks on olive skin can look too ashy, pinky or just plain wrong!  Fortunately, I found one that isn’t new but perfect for what I was looking for.

Tom Ford lipstick in “Sable Smoke” was a color I didn’t expect to like but once I tried it on, at the end of the day after my makeup had faded, I decided I could work with it and enjoy it.  My only complaint about Tom Ford lipsticks ( no hate mail please lol) is I feel it lacks “luminosity and sheen” that I want but realize it has such fabulous qualities  that I am willing to be flexible. The name “smoke” is a bit deceiving since it eludes to something “cool toned or brown” when it is clearly in the warm family and not very brown. So why did I buy it if it lacks sheen and isn’t very cool toned?  The color is a gorgeous caramel/honey (think Brigette Bardot) that can be paired with smokey eyes, soft eyes, tanned skinned, gorgeous honey highlighted hair…shall I go on?  When a Tom Ford lipstick touches your lips, it feels like butter melting on contact and but with loads of pigment and intensity.  Nudes are tricky to find especially if they have pigment which can tend to dry your lips out or look chalky.  Lets take a look at this gorgeous color:

Swatched with sheer gloss over it. To give it some pizazz I topped it with my favorite Dior “Ultra flash gloss” in 432.

*Just a side note: Tom Ford packaging is so pleasing to the eye ladies.  The chocolate brown/gold combo is so tasteful, distinctive and very classy.  I have to say it is probably my favorite packaging and color theme of all lines.

Verdict: At $48 a lipstick you really have to love it and the shade has to be usable.  The texture, the pigment and consistency is truly addicting and explains why Tom Fords lipsticks are the best seller in the whole line.  I am crossing my fingers he launches more colors in the “nude family” preferably pink/beige and pink/nude that doesn’t turn chalky or washed out.  For now, sable smoke is a keeper and definitely a color I have been reaching out for, even in the colder months.
